The National Portrait Gallery contains the world's largest collection of portraits - 10,000 in all. The permanent displays show images of famous British faces from the Tudors to the present day.

                         

Philippe Halsman 23 May-2 Sep: An exhibition on the work of the photographer Philippe Halsman whose portraits regularly appeared on the cover of Life and the other great picture magazines Look, Holiday, and the Saturday Evening Post from the 1940s through to the 1960s. In his studio and on location around the world, Halsman photographed the most prominent figures of the post-war years. A special section of the show is devoted to his famous 'jump' pictures. The Beautiful and the Damned 6 Jun-7 Oct: This photographic exhibition charts the development of photographic portraiture in the 19th century, discussing the role of the portrait image as a method of social classification, and examining the close relationship between photography and the concept of celebrity. It explores the parallel development in the 19th century of celebrity and surveillance portraiture in relation to the prevailing belief of physiognomy, the rise of the new science of genetics and the belief system of social Darwinism.

                         

BP Portrait award 2001 and BP Travel award 2000 21 Jun-16 Sep: The BP Portrait Award is a highly successful annual competition aimed at encouraging young artists to focus upon, and develop, the theme of portraiture within their work. Recent winners include Victoria Russell, Clive Smith, Thomas Watson and James Lloyd. Admission Free – Wolfson Gallery.

                         

John Kobal Photographic Portrait award 2001: The annual photographic award exhibition, in memory of the celebrated film and photography archivist John Kobal, returns with a £2,500 prize. The competition produces startlingly original entries and encourages the innovative use of photographic materials and techniques. Admission Free – Photography Gallery.
