An exhibition on the work of the photographer Philippe Halsman whose portraits regularly appeared on the cover of Life and the other great picture magazines Look, Holiday, and the
Saturday Evening Post from the 1940s through to the 1960s. In his studio and on location around the world, Halsman photographed the most prominent figures of the post-war years. A special section of the

The Beautiful and the Damned 6 Jun-7 Oct:
This photographic exhibition charts the development of photographic portraiture in the 19th century, discussing the role of the portrait image as a method of social classification, and examining the close relationship between photography and the concept of celebrity. It explores the parallel development in the 19th century of celebrity and surveillance portraiture in relation to the prevailing belief of physiognomy, the rise of the new science of genetics and the belief system of social Darwinism.

BP Portrait award 2001 and BP Travel award 2000 21 Jun-16 Sep:
