Urban spring - Isle of Dogs
Ray Stebbing
Even here, where the earth
is shot through with tunnels,
pierced by steel shafts,
stitched with cables,
weighed down with ferroconcrete,
and the rain is channeled
safely into sewers - even here-
in the neglected gardens
of boarded up houses,
between cracked paving stones,
under the wheels of bulldozers,
the earth, unbidden, breaks into bud.
In the waters of a deserted dock
cormorants fish undisturbed.
